The Smart Home - Solutions for secure and independent living

BACKGROUND INFORMATION
The Smart Home, a social, technological and virtual learning and development environment, was established for the purpose of creating an information and test environment for solutions that support independent living. The idea was sparked in 2009. Students and companies alike have welcomed the facility, which was completed in 2011. Through active development efforts, The Smart Home has been constructed into a home-like environment where you can view and try out various technological solutions.

HUMAN TECH SOLUTION
The Smart Home environment of the JAMK University of Applied Sciences is an open and safe space for presenting solutions that support independent living for all kinds of day-to-day needs. Among other things, these solutions include safety technology, furniture and fixtures with adjustable height and depth as well as various solutions for care workers. In contrast to other similar smart home environments, the Smart Home facility in Jyväskylä organises open days and group visits for customers so that they can try out the technological solutions in their natural environment - a home. Companies can use the premises to present their own products in order to collect customer feedback. In addition, the cameras installed throughout the environment can be used to record, monitor and evaluate the activities in the environment for teaching and product development purposes.

RESULTS
The Smart Home, which has been the focus of a great deal of interest, is visited by work groups, students and international guests on a weekly basis. Product manufacturers have also shown an interest in the facility. The Smart Home is a concrete example of the shift in traditional teaching towards research and development conducted with companies. In addition, the aim is to increase awareness of solutions that make day-to-day life easier and increase their acceptance. They are not merely products and solutions designed to assist limited groups of people, they are small everyday miracles intended for all of us. Design for all, as they say.
