Finnish exports increased by almost one-fifth in May compared to the same period last year. According to preliminary data issued by the National Customs Board, exports totaled over 4.1 billion Euros.
Exports showed a slight decline in the first quarter in 2010. In April, a growth of 7 percent was recorded.
New orders grew by most in the metal industry with the iron, steel and copper sectors, in particular showing an improvement. Forest industry exports were also up.
An upswing in EU exports is largely responsible for the boost in industrial export order books. Exports increased especially to Sweden, the Benelux countries and Germany.
Imports were up in May by 15 percent to stand at 3.9 billion Euros. Imports of metals, ores and oil were up.
The trade balance showed a profit of 190 million Euros. This compares to a deficit of 180 million Euros over the first five months of the year.
